Photo Recap: Portland Thorns v Gotham FC

The Portland Thorns remain top in the standings, unbeaten in the last eight games, after their 2-1 victory over Gotham FC. Both goals for the Thorns would come in the first half. Sophia Smith, who tested the keeper early in the match, was first to score in the 29th after pickpocketing Gotham defender Erika Skroski and putting it past the outstretched arms of Sheridan. Ten minutes later, Christine Sinclair and Sophia Smith would make trouble for Gotham again, leading a charge into the box where Sophia Smith was taken down, leading to a PK. Taken by Christine Sinclair in the 41st, the Thorns led 2-0 at half. Gotham, who out possessed the Thorns overall, made a few attempts to come back but only took a total of nine shots on goal. Of the nine, a solid header by Carli Lloyd in the 78th would get past homegrown keeper Bella Bixby, making it 2-1. Gotham would continue to push, looking strong in the second half, but nothing would come of it.

Portland now heads north to face the OL Reign, while Gotham heads home to face Orlando – both games on Sunday.
