Photos/Recap: Thorns overwhelm Kansas City in a 3-0 home opening victory

The Portland Thorns proved to be an overwhelming force for Kansas City, coming away with a 3-0 victory in their home opener. The Thorns demonstrated their strength throughout the match, swarming the KC defense and (finally) finishing their shots. By the 8th minute Morgan Weaver put away the first goal, following a half clearance from KC keeper AD Franch. Halfway through the first half, the Thorns looked completely comfortable, creating deliberate and dangerous runs from multiple places on the pitch.

There was a short pause in the 15th minute when KC defender Mallory Weber crumpled to the field after a non-contact injury. The crowd made a universal gasp as they watched her fall, knowing it wasn’t good, and gave her a warm send off as she was helped off the field.

Continuing their attacks, Sinclair would be the second Thorn to score in the 34th minute. Following up another half clearance, Sinclair sent a left footed dart into the upper right side of the net. The last goal of the night would come from second half sub Sophia Smith. Within minutes of the second half whistle, Smith had already made her way past several defenders and sent the ball to the unreachable upper left, just above the glove of AD Franch.

While the depth of the team has been unquestionable, the Thorns have been inconsistent in past seasons. Now, however, it’s clear that their quality is being skillfully honed by new coach Rhian Wilkinson. The team is coming alive, enjoying playful crosses as much as clinical finishes. This is definitely a new beginning, one that could easily take them to another NWSL final.
