In just his sixth appearance as lead referee, Lukasz Szpala, tried to control the game early – handing out his first yellow card to Timbers midfielder Sebastián Blanco in the 17th minute. Szpala would hand out a total of eight yellow cards (each team picking up four) during the match for anything from a slight flit of contact to a full out tackle. In the 75th minute Portland defender Bill Tuiloma would be sent off after receiving his second yellow of the night, leaving Portland down a man for the remainder of the match. Luckily for Portland, the brace scored by Moreno in the 34th and 36th would hold and the Timbers would pick up all three points, defeating Houston 2-1.
